The two pieces from the tape ‘Silberwein’ present different facets from Gregory Büttner’s work in the last 20 more years. As a musician and artist, his main ‘instruments’ are small external loudspeakers and everyday objects used as resonance bodies.

The basic structure of ‘Voiceless Speakers’ consists of a fixed playback of sine tones, most of which are below the threshold of hearing. The speaker membranes are set into vibration, causing the objects on them to resonate. In some sections, higher sine tones are added, creating an additional voice or interacting with the resonance tones of the objects.

On ‘Silberwein’, Gregory played wine glasses with his fingers. Most of the glasses had been prepared with aluminium foil. He recorded these processes, combined them with a few pure sine waves and a very low-pitched recording of the wine glass sounds, and finally played everything back through small speakers placed on top of the prepared wine glasses.

Gregory Büttner lives and works as a musician and artist in Hamburg. Since 2000, his main focus is on sound art and electroacoustic compositions. He performed at festivals and concert series in Europe, China and Chile, composed music for dance and performance, radio, video and sound installations.

He plays regularly in a duo with Birgit Ulher, Simon Whetham, Gunnar Lettow and ‘Stark Bewölkt Trio’ with Michael Maierhof, Birgit Ulher. He also collaborated with other musicians, visual artists, choreographers and performance artists. His music is released by labels like Firework Edition Records, Aufabwegen, Herbal, Fragment Factory, Grünrekorder, Hideous Replica, Creative Sources, Sub Jam and his own label 1000füssler.
